You know what I absolutely love? When you can call a friend you haven’t spoken to in awhile and it’s as if you just spoke yesterday. That’s what happened when I called my friend Kevin earlier this week. He literally picked up the phone and answered saying, “Sweet Jesus, this bitch is still alive.” My abs hurt so bad from laughter.
I haven’t seen Kevin since June, and hadn’t spoke to him since August, but he was still the same Kevin I had met from day one. I wish all of my friendships and relationships were like that, because it’s one of the greatest feelings.
Anyway, Kevin and I met when I hired him for a few gigs for HotNewHipHop. He’s an amazing make-up artist and photographer, and outside of work, one of the funniest people I have ever met.
Anyway, I remember our first conversations were about dreams and what we wanted for our lives – His was to be an established make-up artist and photographer, so we would talk and work on his plan together.
It’s amazing to see how far he has come in such a short period of time. When we first met, I would pick him up all the way in Long Beach (an hour away from LA with that bullshit traffic), and drive him back because he didn’t have a car. He would ask me if there was extra work because T-Mobile was going to disconnect his phone – and now, he’s paying his bills 3 months in advance.
Reaching a goal or fulfilling one of your dreams is a great feeling – but helping someone reach or fulfill one of theirs is an even greater one.
Kevin, I loveeeee you and had so much fun devouring sliders and margherita pizza. Thank you for always putting a smile on my face, helping me discover well-done fries and spread from In-N-Out, the truffle fries at YardHouse and teaching me how to do my make-up LOL. I’m making progress! So proud of the person you’ve become, and I will always be your little Kourtney Kardashian with my painted nails and mascara. Lots and lots of mascara.
