Obsolete_CDsEveryday, I get the same request – “what’s the best email to send you my [new] music to?”

I always feel bad when people ask me to listen to their music, because I’m not the person you should go to for that. I know, it’s kind of contradicting because I work for DJ SKEE and HotNewHipHop (HNHH) – both very heavily music related, but here’s the thing: The positions I have with both companies, have nothing to do with being an A&R for a project or posting new music on the site… and I’ll never do that simply because it’s not me.

If you really follow my work, you know my interviews are rarely about the music. It’s always something personal. That’s my style. That’s why this industry works for me. Everyone is a hip-hop head, they want to know about the music and they’re interested in the craft. I’m interested in them as a human being. Not just the artist that everyone else sees them as.

And since we’re being all the way honest, I really discover artists I like after coming across a popular song that’s overplayed on the radio or because a friend played it for me. I never really go out of my way to look for it, unless I really, really liked that one song. If that’s the case, I’ll look up more of their songs and they’ll end up taking up a big portion of my iTunes (which needs to for real be updated).  I let the music find me, if that makes any sense.

Sidenote – I also feel really awkward when I listen to people’s music ESPECIALLY in the studio. Everyone does the whole bobbing their head to the rhythm and shit, and I just look wrong and feel uncomfortable doing it so when I don’t, it looks like I don’t like the music when I do – I just don’t like bobbing my big ass head.

Anyway, even though I said don’t send me your music, I still want to help. I’ll introduce you to the right contacts, which is what I do now and you can send them your music. Hate it or love it, I’m just being real. I love the music, I love the people I work with and I’ve been involved with hip-hop for 4 years now – but in a completely different way, and it’s going to stay that way.

If you really want my opinion or help on something – ask me about some life shit so I can inspire you. That’s where my  passion really lies.
